WISH: What If Scenarios for Healthy Norms
The simulation tool WISH – created based on scientific research using an Amsterdam dataset – shows how BMI at group level can develop over time. The underlying model does not produce novel predictions, but is meant to illustrate key results of the research; it’s a communication tool to talk about leverage points in this system. Instead of only focusing on attempts to support healthy behaviour in individuals (action at the level of events), WISH aims to aid breaking unhealthy underlying social norms (action at the level of beliefs and attitudes).
Objective
The goal is to design the WISH tool in such a way that policymakers can use scientifically grounded, quantitative scenarios to strengthen their narrative about systems thinking, for example in conversations about policy choices or funding.
Complexity Science
This tool brings a causal loop diagram to life through simulation. Where systems thinking in policy often relies on static “on paper” models, WISH makes it possible to explore system dynamics interactively.
Co-creation
WISH can be used by systems thinkers (in Amsterdam) in conversations with other stakeholders and makes the motivation and purpose of systems thinking visible at a glance.
Intervention
The tool aids shaping interventions targeted at social norms – which for a large part determine people’s behaviour – thereby surpassing effects of common interventions at group level outcomes.
